Montessori Education fosters independence, self-esteem, social awareness, problem solving, and creative thinking — characteristics that will benefit students throughout their educational journey and beyond.
The Ocean State Montessori School is the oldest Montessori school in Rhode Island. It was founded in 1973 by a group of parents interested in the Montessori Method. They secured a grant to purchase Montessori materials and hired a teacher and two assistants to teach 30 students in a church in Barrington.
Over the years the school has expanded, adding additional Montessori classrooms and programs. In 2009 the Ocean State Montessori School purchased the Grove Avenue Elementary School building at 100 Grove Ave, where the OSMS is currently located. Since then many improvements have been made to the space including the installation of a new playground, upgrading classroom and hallway flooring and interiors, designing and planting an Edible Landscape, and installing fences to create outdoor classroom space.
The Ocean State Montessori School currently provides Montessori programs for children ages 3 through 12 (preschool through sixth grade) as well as extended day programs.
Enrollment at the school is approximately 120 students.
